How we read the snow forecast

A good snow report does not just say "it is going to snow": it answers how much, where and in what conditions. At WhatAWeather we cross four key variables from the Open-Meteo weather models for every ski resort in Spain, Andorra and the Pyrenees.

Fresh snow by elevation

The amounts of new snow change a lot with altitude: at the same resort it can rain at the base while 20 cm fall at the top. That is why we compute the forecast at three levels —base, mid and top elevation— using the real altitude of each ski area. The powder finder figure always refers to the top elevation, where powder snow keeps best.

Freezing level

The freezing level (0 °C isotherm) marks the boundary between rain and snow. If during a snowfall the freezing level sits some 200-300 metres above the spot where you want to ski, precipitation will arrive wet or as rain. A low, stable freezing level after the snowfall also keeps the snow cold and in good condition.

Wind on the lifts

Strong gusts are skiing's great spoiler: with sustained values above 60-80 km/h resorts usually close high-elevation chairlifts and gondolas. We flag with a warning the days with forecast gusts above 70 km/h so you can rethink the day or choose a more sheltered resort.

Reliability and horizon

The first three days of the forecast are reliable; from day four to day seven it is best read as a trend. Before booking a ski pass or accommodation, review the report 48 hours ahead and compare it with the resort's official snow depth report, which measures the snow actually accumulated on the slopes.

Frequently asked questions

How often is the snow report updated?

Data comes from Open-Meteo and is updated several times a day with each weather model run (every 3-6 hours). On this page the fresh snow ranking is cached for 30 minutes in your browser to speed up loading.

What is the freezing level and why does it matter?

It is the altitude at which the air temperature crosses 0 °C. Above it, precipitation falls as snow; below it, as rain. If the freezing level ends up above the resort's top elevation, it will rain on every slope and the snow will deteriorate.

How reliable is the 7-day snow forecast?

The first 2-3 days are highly reliable; between day 4 and day 7 the forecast is indicative and amounts can vary between model runs. Use it to spot trends and confirm the amounts 48 hours before your trip.

Why can wind close the lifts?

Chairlifts and gondolas usually stop with gusts above 60-80 km/h for safety, especially at exposed high elevations. With forecast gusts above 70 km/h, expect possible partial closures and check the resort's official report.
