Methodology: 2015-2024 climate normals
For the chosen destination, this tool downloads the daily history of the 10 full years between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2024: maximum and minimum temperature, accumulated precipitation and sunshine duration. The source is the ERA5 reanalysis from the European Copernicus programme (ECMWF), served through the Open-Meteo historical archive API, with a spatial resolution of about 25 km statistically downscaled. The calculations run in your browser: for each month of the year the daily temperatures are averaged, each month's rainfall is summed and averaged over the 10 years, the days with more than 1 mm of precipitation are counted, and the average daily sunshine hours are computed.
Each month's 0-to-10 score combines thermal comfort (ideal maximums between 18 and 27 °C), rain frequency and sunshine hours. It is an indicative rating designed for general tourism; if you travel to ski, surf or watch auroras, your ideal months may be different. Climate normals describe typical behaviour, not the specific forecast for your travel dates.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the climate data come from?
From the ERA5 reanalysis database (Copernicus/ECMWF) served by the Open-Meteo historical archive API. For each destination we download the daily data from 2015 to 2024 (10 full years) and compute the monthly averages right in your browser.
How is each month's score calculated?
Each month gets a score from 0 to 10 based on three factors: thermal comfort (ideal between 18 and 27 °C average maximum temperature), average rainy days (penalised from the fourth day onwards) and daily sunshine hours (penalised below 6 hours). It is a general guideline for city and nature tourism.
Does it work for any city in the world?
Yes. The search uses Open-Meteo's geographic database, which covers virtually any locality on the planet, and the ERA5 reanalysis has global coverage with a resolution of about 25 km, statistically downscaled by Open-Meteo.
Does the average climate guarantee the weather during my trip?
No. These values are climate normals: they describe the typical behaviour of each month, not the specific forecast for particular dates. For trips less than 14 days away, also check the weather forecast for the destination.
