Alicante enjoys a semi-arid Mediterranean climate, with more than 2,800 hours of sunshine a year. Summer highs hover around 31 degrees Celsius and winter lows rarely fall below 7 degrees.
Rainfall is scarce (around 330 mm a year) and concentrated in autumn. Cut-off lows can drop torrential rain over the Maigmo range or the Tibi reservoir, with flash-flood risk along the Rambla de las Ovejas.
Easterly winds bring coastal cloud, while westerlies dry the air and raise wildfire risk in summer. The sea breeze, locally called marinada, softens afternoons.
