Climate in Amsterdam
Amsterdam has a temperate oceanic climate, similar to Londons but with slightly cooler nights. Summers are mild (average highs of 22 degrees Celsius) and winters mild (average lows of 1 degree).
Annual rainfall is around 830 mm over more than 130 rainy days. Atlantic depressions are frequent and west/south-westerly winds persistent. Winters are damp with grey skies.
Sea level and the canal network are critical: North Sea storm surges require a sophisticated dam system such as the Maeslantkering. Hard frosts are occasional and allow canal skating only in very cold years.
Best time to visit is April to June (when Keukenhof blooms) and September. Use the hourly forecast, rain probability and wind before planning the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House or a canal cruise.
