Climate in Berlin

Berlin has a temperate continental climate, with warm summers (average highs of 24 degrees Celsius) and cold winters (average lows of minus 2). Annual thermal range is notable, larger than in Atlantic capitals.

Annual rainfall is around 570 mm, spread across the year but peaking in summer through convective storms. Snowfalls are frequent between December and February, though without extreme depths.

Heatwaves have intensified in recent summers, with peaks near 40 degrees. Brandenburg forests and the Spree and Havel rivers moderate central night temperatures.

Across these 30 years the highest temperature was 37.5 °C, on 20 July 2022, and the lowest -21.6 °C, on 23 January 2006. These are reanalysis values, not those of an observatory: they are useful for placing the magnitude, not as an official record.

Where these numbers come from

From ERA5-Land, the reanalysis produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, downloaded from the Copernicus Climate Data Store under a CC-BY licence: hourly temperature and precipitation between 1995-01-01 and 2024-12-06, 30 complete years, in the 52.50°, 13.40° cell. It is a grid of about 9 km covering land only.

The Spanish cities on this site use AEMET’s official normals; there is no single equivalent for ten different countries, so the same global series is used for all of them. That has an advantage: the figures are comparable with one another, computed by the same method over the same period. And a limitation: a reanalysis cannot see the urban heat island, so in the centre of a large city the real minima are usually somewhat higher than those in the table.
