Burgos, at 860 metres elevation, has one of the coldest climates in peninsular Spain. Summers are mild with average highs of 27 degrees Celsius, while winters are cold with average lows of minus 1 and frequent snowfalls.
Annual rainfall is around 570 mm, spread across the year with an autumn peak. Persistent fog in the Arlanzon basin is common from November to February, with low visibility lasting several days.
The north-easterly cierzo dries the air and amplifies cold. The southerly foehn can drive sudden winter warm-ups, soon replaced by rain fronts from the Cantabrian Sea.
