Climate in Gijon

Gijon has a typical oceanic climate of the Cantabrian coast, with cool, humid summers (average highs of 23 degrees Celsius) and mild winters (lows of 5 degrees). Annual thermal range is very small and frost is rare near the sea.

Annual rainfall is around 1,000 mm over more than 130 rainy days. Atlantic depressions and north-westerly fronts are frequent, producing persistent rain locally known as orbayu.

Cantabrian storms, especially with NNW swell, can generate large waves at San Lorenzo beach and the marina. Spring tides multiply the risk.

Best time to visit is June to September, with pleasant temperatures and long days. Use the hourly forecast and sea state before planning Cerro de Santa Catalina, a sidreria in Cimavilla or a day at San Lorenzo beach.
