Climate in London

London has a temperate oceanic climate, mild year-round but famously changeable. Average July highs hover around 23 degrees Celsius and January lows around 3 degrees. Annual temperature range is very small.

Annual rainfall is around 600 mm over more than 110 rainy days. Atlantic depressions arrive in succession, hence the reputation for grey skies and sudden showers.

Summer heatwaves have grown more frequent, with all-time records above 40 degrees in July 2022. Smog and air quality are issues, especially near the centre and urban motorways.

Best time to visit is May to September, although spring offers blooming parks and winter has its festive charm. Use the hourly forecast, shower probability and air quality before planning the British Museum, Camden or the Tower.

The climate of London, with thirty years of data

London is drier than its reputation suggests: it rains on many days but little each time, and the annual total is lower than in much of northern Spain. The Atlantic holds the thermometer within a narrow range, and what really characterises the city is the urban heat island, which on summer nights can leave the centre several degrees above the surrounding counties.

Across these 30 years the highest temperature was 36.4 °C, on 19 July 2022, and the lowest -9.5 °C, on 20 December 2010. These are reanalysis values, not those of an observatory: they are useful for placing the magnitude, not as an official record.

Where these numbers come from

From ERA5-Land, the reanalysis produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, downloaded from the Copernicus Climate Data Store under a CC-BY licence: hourly temperature and precipitation between 1995-01-01 and 2024-12-06, 30 complete years, in the 51.50°, -0.10° cell. It is a grid of about 9 km covering land only.

The Spanish cities on this site use AEMET’s official normals; there is no single equivalent for ten different countries, so the same global series is used for all of them. That has an advantage: the figures are comparable with one another, computed by the same method over the same period. And a limitation: a reanalysis cannot see the urban heat island, so in the centre of a large city the real minima are usually somewhat higher than those in the table.
