Malaga is one of the mildest cities in Europe. Its subtropical Mediterranean climate, sheltered by the Montes de Malaga, brings hot summers with average highs of 30 degrees Celsius and extremely mild winters, with daytime averages around 17 degrees even in January.
The terral, a hot, dry foehn wind dropping from the hills, can push temperatures above 40 degrees on several days each year, usually in July and August. Sea breezes cool the afternoon at La Malagueta and the historic centre.
Annual rainfall is around 530 mm, concentrated in autumn and winter. Atlantic depressions crossing the Strait can deliver heavy rain and occasional hail in higher areas such as Mijas or Antequera.
Malaga is a year-round destination, but April, May, September and October combine pleasant temperatures with sea still warm enough for swimming. Use the forecast to plan the Alcazaba, La Caleta beach or a route to the Caminito del Rey with good visibility.
