Climate in Mexico City

Mexico City has a subtropical highland climate shaped by its 2,240-metre elevation. Temperatures are mild year-round: average highs of 24 degrees Celsius in May (the warmest month) and average lows of 5 degrees in January.

Annual rainfall is around 850 mm, concentrated in the rainy season from June to October, when afternoon thunderstorms with hail and lightning are common. The dry season from November to April brings clearer but dustier conditions.

Air quality is a key challenge: a basin closed by mountains traps pollutants, and environmental contingency events can affect daily life. Dust intrusions and ozone are recurrent issues.

Best time to visit is March-May and late summer. Use the hourly forecast, air quality (PM2.5 and ozone) and storm probability before planning the Zocalo, Coyoacan or Teotihuacan.

From ERA5-Land, the reanalysis produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, downloaded from the Copernicus Climate Data Store under a CC-BY licence: hourly temperature and precipitation between 1995-01-01 and 2024-12-06, 30 complete years, in the 19.40°, -99.10° cell. It is a grid of about 9 km covering land only.

The Spanish cities on this site use AEMET’s official normals; there is no single equivalent for ten different countries, so the same global series is used for all of them. That has an advantage: the figures are comparable with one another, computed by the same method over the same period. And a limitation: a reanalysis cannot see the urban heat island, so in the centre of a large city the real minima are usually somewhat higher than those in the table.
