Climate in New York

New York has a humid continental climate with maritime influence, producing four very marked seasons. Summers are hot and humid (average highs of 29 degrees Celsius) and winters cold with frequent snow (average lows of minus 2).

Annual rainfall is around 1,200 mm, spread across the year. Summer convective storms are common, and autumn remnants of tropical cyclones (such as Sandy in 2012 or Ida in 2021) can cause severe flooding.

Winter storms or noreasters bring heavy snowfall and strong winds from the Atlantic, closing JFK and disrupting the subway. The urban heat island is pronounced in Manhattan.

Best time to visit is spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). Use the hourly forecast, snow or tropical storm alerts and air quality before planning Central Park, Times Square or Liberty Island.
