Trade winds keep the air cool and reduce cloud cover over the south of the island, while the north often stays cloudy. Saharan air intrusions (calima) can push temperatures above 38 degrees and harm air quality.
Annual rainfall is around 230 mm, concentrated from November to February. Autumn depressions approaching the Canaries can produce localised torrential rain, as with Tropical Storm Delta in 2005.
