Climate in Vitoria-Gasteiz
Vitoria-Gasteiz has an oceanic climate transitioning to continental Mediterranean, shaped by its plateau enclosed by mountains. Summers are cool by Spanish standards, with average highs of 26 degrees Celsius, and winters are cold with frequent fog and occasional snow.
Annual rainfall is around 800 mm, spread across the year with peaks in autumn and spring. Persistent fog can last several days thanks to temperature inversions over the Alavese basin.
A warm, dry southerly wind drives sudden winter temperature spikes (Pyrenean foehn), while the north-easterly cierzo dries the air.
Best time to visit is May to September. Use the hourly forecast, fog probability and UV index before planning the Green Belt, the Medieval Quarter or a trip to the Ullibarri reservoir.
